Location: Remote across USA
Senior Data Strategist/CDO experienced midstream oil pipeline to lead the design, development, and optimization of data-driven solutions that support strategic business objectives.
The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of end-to-end cloud engineering, security, data pipelines, data warehouses, data science, and data governance. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient data operations that support our complex midstream operations and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Strategy and Architecture
- Develop and maintain the company’s data strategy, aligning it with broader business goals and digital transformation initiatives.
- Design and implement scalable, secure, and efficient data architectures for the ingestion, storage, and analysis of large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
- Create roadmaps for data architecture enhancements, ensuring compatibility with cloud-native solutions.
Data Pipeline Development
- Lead the design, development, and optimization of complex ETL/ELT processes to support end-to-end data flows from various sources, including SCADA, IoT devices, and transactional systems.
- Ensure real-time data acquisition, transformation, and delivery for critical business operations such as pipeline monitoring, predictive maintenance, and financial analytics.
- Collaborate with data science teams to build, maintain, and monitor machine learning pipelines.
Cloud Engineering
- Oversee cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.) for optimal performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability in line with business needs.
- Implement and manage infrastructure-as-code (IaC) for automated provisioning of cloud services.
- Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and redundancy in cloud environments to support uninterrupted midstream operations.
Data Warehousing & Analytics
- Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of data warehouses or data lakes to store and manage high volumes of operational data.
- Work closely with BI and analytics teams to create scalable and efficient data models that support ad-hoc querying, reporting, and advanced analytics.
- Enable self-service analytics capabilities for business users by establishing governance frameworks and curated data layers.
Data Security & Governance
- Develop and enforce data security policies, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as NERC-CIP, GDPR, and other regulatory requirements specific to the energy sector.
- Implement data encryption, access control, and monitoring solutions to safeguard sensitive operational data.
- Lead data governance efforts by establishing data stewardship roles, metadata management, and lineage tracking to ensure data quality and accountability across the organization.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, engineering, operations, and business units, to ensure that data initiatives meet operational and business goals.
- Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies such as AI/ML, predictive analytics, and advanced automation to enhance pipeline safety, efficiency, and decision-making.
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
- 15+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or data strategy, with significant exposure to midstream oil and gas operations.
- Strong expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) with proven experience in designing and managing cloud-based data infrastructure.
- Proficiency in designing and managing ETL/ELT data pipelines using tools such as Apache Airflow, dbt, or similar.
- Deep understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience with platforms like Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift.
- Knowledge of data governance frameworks and tools such as Collibra, Alation, or Apache Atlas.
- Experience with data security principles, encryption, and access control solutions (KMS, IAM, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with SQL and modern programming languages like Python, Scala, or Java.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, IoT data processing, and real-time analytics.
- Proven leadership abilities in managing complex data projects and working with cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into business-friendly language.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, or related fields.
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications for predictive analytics in the energy sector.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar.
- Familiarity with midstream industry regulations and compliance frameworks like NERC-CIP.
